Why this recipe works so well
If you love the taste of stovetop sautéed mushrooms and onions, you'll love this air fryer version! Here's why:
- Less oil needed. The circulating air mimics sautéing with just a little bit of oil and the mushrooms and onions won't get too soft like they sometimes do in a skillet.
- Incredible flavor. You get the same deep, savory, caramelized flavor as you would on the stovetop. (Not quite as deep or caramelized as you get for my dairy-free caramelized onion dip, but the rich flavor is still there)!
- Almost hands-off. Instead of babysitting a skillet on the stovetop, just stir the mushrooms and onions once, and the air fryer does the rest. (It's the same reason I love to cook peppers and onions in the air fryer too)!
- Faster cleanup. You only need to wash a non-stick air fryer basket instead of a heavy, crusted skillet.

Ingredient notes and substitutions

- Fresh mushrooms - I normally use cremini mushrooms (baby bellas), as I do with my mushroom spinach dip, as I like the firm texture and earthy flavor. You can also use white or button mushrooms.
- Yellow onion - This is probably the most common type of onion. It has a strong flavor and it's great for caramelizing. If you prefer a milder onion, try using a white or sweet onion.
- Olive oil - Some recipes call for oil and butter but we're using all oil here. I prefer olive oil for the mild flavor, but avocado oil works too.
- Worcestershire sauce - Adding this was a reader recommendation and it adds a slight umami flavor.
- Seasonings - Just some salt, pepper and garlic powder. Feel free to also add some dried herbs like thyme or oregano.
How to air fry mushrooms and onions

Step 1: Clean the mushrooms and slice them in half. Cut the onions lengthwise in ¼ inch slices.

Step 2: Add the mushrooms and onions to a large bowl and toss with oil, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Step 3: Place the seasoned mushrooms and onions in the air fryer basket. They will be overlapping and that's okay.

Step 4: Air fry on 400F for 11-13 minutes, stirring them at the mid-way point.
Expert tips for air frying mushrooms and onions
- Mushrooms: They will shrink quite a bit so I usually cut them in half instead of into thin slices. If your mushrooms are large, you may want to quarter them.
- Onions: The onions won't soften as much as sautéed onions and will still have a little bite. Cut them into ¼-inch slices so they cook at the same rate as the mushrooms.
- Air fryer capacity: I used a 5.8 quart air fryer. If you're using a smaller capacity air fryer, the basket will be full so you'll need to add about 5 minutes to the air frying time and shake the basket more than once to rotate the mushrooms and onions around.

Air fryer mushrooms and onions FAQs
You can clean mushrooms in two different ways. You can gently rub the dirt off each one with a paper towel. Or, you can rinse the mushrooms in a colander and pat them dry with a paper towel. I prefer to rub the dirt off as rinsing them may cause the mushrooms to absorb some water and affect how well they air fry.
The mushrooms should be browned and tender, but not too soft. They will also shrink in size. The onions will get translucent and start to caramelize around the edges. They should soften a bit but still have some bite. If you want them caramelized a bit more, air fry them for another few minutes. Just keep an eye on them as the mushrooms can start to dry out and the onions will burn.
The easiest way is to pop them in the microwave for 45-60 seconds, or until heated through. You can also reheat them in the air fryer on 350F for 3-5 minutes or in a skillet on the stove top.
Serving them with grilled steaks or pork chops is always delicious. You can also try them on the side with these air fryer pork medallions or air fryer chicken cutlets. If you have some left over and want to incorporate them into breakfast, I think serving them with some air fryer egg bites and bacon would work well. We also sometimes use them as a pizza topping for these air fryer mini pizzas or this healthier pizza recipe!

- ½ pound (227 g) cremini mushrooms, halved (or quartered, if large)

- 2 tablespoons olive oil

- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Place all of the ingredients in a large bowl and toss together until the mushrooms and onions are well coated.

Notes

Try adding a splash of Worchestershire, maybe a teaspoon. Makes them taste like steakhouse mushrooms 😋

Great idea. I’ve never though of doing mushrooms and onions in the air fryer but it would be so much easier! Definitely will have to try this. I usually just have this with steak or burgers but I really like the idea of putting it on pizza too!
