Air Fryer Pita Chips are one of the easiest snacks to make in the air fryer! They’re lightly seasoned and take just 8 minutes to get golden brown and crunchy. Eat them on their own or serve them up with your favourite dip or hummus!
We love chips and dip in our house! It’s one of our go-to combos for parties, appetizers and mid-day snacking. Since we eat so much of it, I try to save a few dollars and make homemade chips and dip when I can.
These air fryer tortilla chips have been a staple for us for years, and now these air fryer pita chips are quickly becoming a favourite. They’re quick and easy to make, and can be seasoned however you like.
We’ve been enjoying them with white bean dip but this edamame hummus would be great too!
Why you’ll love this recipe
- It’s a simple recipe! You only need 5 ingredients and the entire batch only takes about 8 minutes in the air fryer.
- While these chips are seasoned with a simple mix of Italian seasoning, salt and garlic powder, you can change it up with different dried herbs and spices. (Suggestions included below).
- It’s a great way to use up pitas that might be getting a little stale. Once air fried, these chips will keep for a week or longer without losing their crunch.
Details on the ingredients
Pita bread: You can use white or whole wheat pitas for this recipe. I’ve tried both and there was no difference in results. I use the pita bread with pockets. As they’re thin, they don’t take long to air fry.
Oil: The recipe calls for extra virgin olive oil but you can use the oil of your choice.
Seasoning: The chips are seasoned with Italian seasoning, garlic powder and salt. I use Club House brand Italian seasoning (not sponsored, just what we have on hand) but you can use another brand or make your own.
How to make pita chips in the air fryer
Cut your pitas into triangles. (I usually get 8 triangles per pita).
Place them in a large bowl and slowly drizzle the oil over the pita pieces, making sure they are well coated.
Add the seasonings and toss to combine. (I usually use my fingers to rub the oil and seasoning onto the pitas to ensure even coverage).
Place in the air fryer basket and air fry on 350F for 6-8 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. (You’ll need to shake the basket a few times so the chips on the bottom rotate to the top).
Let cool before serving (they’ll get crispier as they cool) and store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature.
Seasoning variations
There are so many ways to change up the seasoning on these chips. Here are a few suggestions:
- Keep it simple with just salt and pepper.
- For a savoury flavour, try oregano and basil.
- Go a little spicy with crushed red pepper flakes or chipotle powder.
- You can’t go wrong with Trader Joe’s chili lime or everything but the bagel seasoning.
- For a cheesy flavour without any dairy, sprinkle on some nutritional yeast.
- Try a sweet version with some cinnamon and coconut sugar.
Serving options
Pita chips go perfectly with hummus like this roasted beet hummus or arugula hummus.
For lunch, add a handful of pita chips to these black bean hummus bowls.
Instead of hummus, try this jalapeno dip, chipotle dip or roasted red pepper cashew dip
These chips would go perfectly with a caesar salad or this white bean tuna salad.
Instead of crackers on a cheese board, add some crispy pita chips.
Frequently asked questions
I find 350F is the best temperature to air fry pita chips. It’s high enough to brown them quickly but not too high that they burn. Of course, if you know your air fryer runs a little hot, you may want to reduce the temperature slightly, at least the first time you make these chips.
At 350F, these chips only take 6-8 minutes to air fry. At this point, they should be golden brown and crispy. If not, just air fry them a little longer. Keep an eye on them as they start to burn quickly.
Once fully cooled, pita chips should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
If stored properly, pita chips should last for at least a week. (They won’t lose their crunch!)
If you have frozen pita bread, you’ll want to defrost it first before cutting it into triangles and seasoning.
Key recipe tips
- There’s no need to air fry the pita chips in a single layer, but you will need to shake the basket a few times to ensure they brown evenly.
- This recipe was tested in a 5.8 quart Corori air fryer. If you have a smaller air fryer, you may need to air fry the pita chips in two batches as you don’t want to overfill the basket.
- Sometimes light food (like tortillas or bacon) may blow around in the air fryer. I didn’t find that happened with these pita chips, but if it does, you can try placing a trivet or rack on top to prevent them from blowing around.
- If you preheat your air fryer, the chips will brown a little quicker.
- Be careful not to use too much oil on the chips. Instead of making them crispier, it will just make them soggy.
- These chips are only lightly seasoned. If you like your chips well seasoned, feel free to add more salt, garlic or Italian seasoning.
